One man is in custody and Vancouver police are investigating a stabbing and arson that has left a 59-year-old recovering in hospital.

At about 7:30 p.m., police received reports of a man that had been stabbed and a fire in the 2100 block Fir Street. Police arrived and found the victim suffering from a stab wound to his shoulder and a commercial building at 2150 Fir Street on fire. The fire is being treated as suspicious and the two incidents are believed to be connected.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of serious, but non life threatening injuries.

A 44 year old man was arrested shortly after the incident in East Vancouver and faces possible assault, weapons, and arson related charges.

It is still early in the investigation and detectives will be trying to determine the motive for the attack and arson. The victim and suspect are known to each other and the incident is not believed to be random.
