A Good Samaritan is being credited with helping catch a man alleged to have robbed a Subway restaurant on the morning of Monday, September 17th.

Shortly before 8 a.m., a man walked into the Subway in the 100 block West Hastings Street and allegedly started screaming at a staff member and demanded money. The man suddenly jumped over the counter, grabbed some cash, and ran out the door.

A Good Samaritan was in the bathroom at the time and heard the screaming. When he came out, the staff member told him that the store had been robbed. The Good Samaritan struggled with the suspect and was able to restrain him until police arrived.

Forty-six year old James Frederick Escher of no fixed address has been charged with one count of robbery. He is known to police, having just completed a 30-month sentence for a 2010 robbery in Kelowna.  He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at 9:30 a.m. on September 28th in Provincial Court.
