Police and the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service are investigating two suspicious overnight fires at the Brockton Oval and Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park.

Just before 11:30 p.m. on September 18th, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service crews and officers from the Vancouver Police responded to a call of a fire on Vancouver Parks Board property at Malkin Bowl. A dumpster set on fire caused minor damage to a fence.

A short time later, a second call of a fire at Brockton Oval came in and emergency crews found a second dumpster on fire and that the flames were spreading to the roof of the Brockton Oval clubhouse. While the damage to the clubhouse is believed to be extensive, fire crews were able to contain it to the south end of the building. Investigators will be returning to Brockton Oval this morning to assess the extent of the damage.

Fire investigators with the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service and VPD Arson Unit have determined that the fires were deliberately set. It is still early in the investigation but it is believed that last nights’ fires are connected.

Police continue to work closely with park staff. It is not believed that these fires are connected to ones set in June adjacent to the Vancouver Police Mounted Squad.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call Vancouver Police Major Crime Section at (604) 717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
