Vancouver Police are taking part in an initiative aimed at helping keep low-income seniors safer.

The Portland Hotel Society launched the program today, which will see donated cell phones capable of dialing 9-1-1 given to seniors in the Downtown Eastside. Community partners include Telus, Vancity, Vancouver City Hall, Free Geek and the VPD.

Organizers are asking for working phones, with the SIM card removed, and chargers. The donated phones will be checked to ensure everything has been erased.

“Many of us get new phones and don’t know what to do with our old ones,” says Vancouver Police Inspector Michelle Davey. “We’re asking people to donate them and help these seniors not only feel safer, but be safer. A phone call to 9-1-1 could literally be somebody’s lifeline.”
