A 57-year-old Vancouver woman is in stable condition, recovering in hospital from stab wounds she received while standing at a crosswalk on Saturday morning.

Around 11:00 on February 15th, the woman was waiting to cross Hastings Street, between Abbott and Carrall, when she was attacked from behind by a stranger. She was punched in the head, knocked to the ground, stabbed, and left bleeding on the sidewalk.

A passing driver was able to follow the attacker as he walked east on Hastings Street. The witness was able to provide police with a description of the suspect, which led to his arrest a short distance away.

During the arrest, the suspect began to fight with police, forcefully kicking one officer and attempting to take the firearm from another. He was restrained by officers and taken to the Vancouver City jail.

John Gordon Paterson, a 42-year-old Vancouver resident, has now been charged with attempted murder, assaulting a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer.

Paterson remains in police custody pending the results of his court appearance scheduled for 9:30 this morning.
