Police continue their investigation into a fatal collision on Main Street near East 49th Avenue earlier this evening.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., a mini-van travelling south on Main Street crossed into the northbound lanes at East 49th Avenue. The van struck the curb and five parked cars.

A 38-year-old man driving the vehicle suffered significant injuries, but they are not life-threatening. His 82-year-old father in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s 74-year-old mother who was in the front passengers seat was taken to hospital, but died shortly after.

While it is still early in the investigation, it appears that both of the passengers killed in the crash were wearing their seatbelts.

Officers with the VPD Collision investigation Unit are trying to determine the cause of the collision, but alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The speed of the van has not yet been determined. Investigators will see if any medical issues may have played a role in the incident and will also examine the older model mini-van for any mechanical problems.

Both north and southbound traffic on Main Street between 49th and 50th Avenue will remain shut down as police continue their investigation. This is the sixth and seventh traffic related fatality of the year.
