Vancouver Police are expressing their appreciation to an unknown man who helped two VPD officers yesterday as they fought to take a violent man into custody.
At about 6:30 p.m. on September 23rd, the officers were flagged down by several concerned and fearful people near the Vancouver Convention Centre. They were troubled by the actions of a shirtless man who appeared very agitated, was yelling, and throwing punches. The uniformed officers exited their police car and caught up to the man near a set of stairs at Jack Poole Plaza.
The officers spoke with him to try and determine the cause of his behaviour, and if they could provide some help. He did stop when asked, but quickly turned on the officers, and a violent struggle ensued. An unknown citizen came to the aid of the officers by holding the man’s legs, which created an opportunity for the officers to gain control and place the assailant in handcuffs until back-up arrived.
The accused was taken to jail by police wagon and several charges, including assaulting a police officer, have been recommended against the 33-year-old Burnaby resident.
The good Samaritan left before the officers had a chance to get his name and properly thank him. It is believed he may have been a construction worker. The VPD would like to have the opportunity to express their gratitude, and are asking him to contact the Vancouver Police by email at vpd@vpd.ca.
