Patrol District One

Patrol District OneDistrict One includes the neighbourhoods of the West End, Yaletown, Coal Harbour and the Central Business District of Vancouver. District One has two Community Policing Centres:

The residential population of District One is over 80,000 people, mostly in high-rise apartments. The daytime population (workers, students, tourists, and others) is estimated at over 300,000.

District One is the province's largest tourist draw, having the Vancouver Convention Centre, Canada Place, Rogers Arena, B.C. Place and approximately 10,000 first class hotel rooms. Evenings draw large crowds to concerts, sporting events, pubs and cabarets, with the 900 Block of Granville Street houses the highest concentration of "liquor primary" establishments in the city.

Priorities for District One include increasing police presence in or around bars during periods of increased activity, and increasing traffic enforcement to ensure safety for all. In addition, District One conducts targeted projects and scheduled blitzes to deal with individuals causing a nuisance or compromising citizens' sense of safety. Members within the District work to reduce non-violent and drug crime through public education, targeted enforcement and undercover projects. The District also operates a specialized Firearms Interdiction Team to check individuals and vehicles associated with gangs and violence who may visit the downtown core for questionable purposes.

The VPD Mounted (Horse) Unit operates from District One, patrolling Stanley Park, the beaches, the downtown and other areas in Vancouver when required.

As a result of the large daytime population and tourist and entertainment visitors, District One Patrol Members always police more than the District's residential population, a unique and complex challenge.
