Police are reminding people to lock their windows and doors to protect themselves from break-ins.

Warmer weather brings a tendency for people to leave their windows and doors ajar to let fresh air in. Unfortunately, with that fresh air comes the tendency for criminals to take advantage of those openings to help themselves to your property.

“Thieves tend to target apartments and houses with open windows and doors,” says VPD spokesperson Sergeant Randy Fincham. “Are you helping thieves by leaving your windows and doors unlocked?”

Police are asking residents to be vigilant about locking their doors and windows and to report any suspicious activity to police.
