Charges have now been laid in the 2009 death of a 41-year-old homeless and disabled man.
On April 9th, 2009, shortly after 7:30 a.m., the body of Michael Ciro Nestoruk was found on the grounds of Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School located at Kingsway Avenue and Joyce Street. His body was discovered by parents who were dropping their children off for school.
The resulting investigation confirmed that Mr. Nestoruk had been murdered.
Particularly disconcerting in this murder was that Michael Nestoruk was quite vulnerable, in that he was a disabled and homeless wheelchair-bound man with one leg, who was suffering from addiction.
The Vancouver Police made several appeals to the public for information and on November 19th, 2009, the Vancouver Police Board offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder.
On April 16th, at about 1:00 p.m., the Vancouver Police took the man believed responsible into custody near Renfrew and Hastings. The arrest comes one week past the five-year anniversary of Nestoruk’s death.
Thirty-seven-year-old Aaron Dale Power of Vancouver has now been charged with one count of second degree murder. Power has an extensive criminal background and is well-known to police. He remains in custody until his next court appearance.
