A VPD Traffic officer was assaulted while patrolling on his bicycle this week after he tried to stop a man jaywalking at a busy downtown intersection. When he asked the man to stop, the man responded by punching the officer in the face with a closed fist. He was also holding a long metal saw in his other hand.

A struggle ensued, but the officer was able to prevent the man from using the saw as a weapon until additional officers arrived to assist with taking him into custody.

The officer suffered bruising and swelling. The suspect is facing possible charges of assault a peace officer with a weapon and obstruct police.
