A protest in Downtown Vancouver today led to five people arrested by police after hours of attempted negotiation.
“At its peak, a group of 150 people blocked the intersection of Granville and Georgia Streets while surrounding a boat,” says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “They blocked traffic in all directions and caused major traffic disruptions. Protesters placed a 15-foot boat on Georgia Street.”
After allowing the group to peacefully assemble and express themselves for several hours, VPD officers asked the protesters to leave the area so the intersection could reopen. Most attendees were cooperative with police and left the area.
Four people remained in the boat, despite multiple requests from police to exit.
Five adults, between 22 and 65 years old, refused to leave and were arrested for mischief and intimidation to block a roadway.
Vancouver Fire Rescue Services assisted with removing the boat.
