My thoughts are with the family of Alfred Wong, whose journey to find justice for Alfred’s murder must now continue. Alfred was just 15 years old when his life was stolen by someone who recklessly fired a bullet. Though a verdict was not reached today, I remain hopeful that the person responsible for Alfred’s murder will, in time, face the consequences they deserve.
I am very proud of the Vancouver Police officers who responded the night Alfred was shot, and for those who spent more than four years painstakingly collecting the evidence that led to the arrest and charge of a suspect in Alfred’s murder. I thank members of the BC Prosecution Service for their efforts to bring justice, and I extend my appreciation to the jurors who deliberated at length and tried to reach a verdict in this case.
A mistrial was not the outcome we wanted. I can only imagine the sorrow this has brought upon Alfred’s family, loved ones, and friends. However, we must all respect the judicial process, and remember that the wheels of justice do sometimes grind slowly. I remain hopeful that, as time passes, we will find the accountability we all seek, and the justice Alfred deserves.
