Vancouver – A suspect has been arrested by Vancouver Police and charged with multiple offences following an attempted armed robbery at a downtown retailer on Monday.

VPD responded to Holt Renfrew just before noon on December 30 after 9-1-1 callers reported someone had entered the store, threatened to shoot staff, and attempted to steal merchandise.

VPD officers arrested the suspect outside the store, with help from a witness.

Following the arrest, police seized two improvised explosive devices, a firearm, and other weapons. The explosive devices were later rendered safe by explosive technicians from VPD’s Emergency Response Section.

Douglas Ewing, 66, has now been charged with robbery, uttering threats to cause death, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Ewing remains in custody until his next court appearance.
