VPD Cadet Program

Applications for the 2021-2022 school year
are now being accepted until May 15, 2021.

The Vancouver Police Department Cadet Program is a community-based youth leadership program that brings together students in Grades 10 through 12 from secondary schools across Vancouver. Led by VPD officers, who serve as cadet instructors throughout the 28-week program, youth participants take part in a variety of activities and events designed to bolster and strengthen skills in the areas of teamwork, leadership, community service, physical fitness, nutrition, communication, public speaking and more.

Established in 2014, the program accepts 40 to 60 new participants annually, with approximately the same number of graduates each year.

The objective of the program is simple: to provide young people with the tools to maximize their individual potential, with emphasis placed on the five VPD core values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence.

Cadets get an inside look at various units within the VPD, with presentations from officers working in the Marine Unit, Mounted Squad, Canine Unit, Traffic Section, Gang Crime Unit, and many more. Through this behind-the-scenes look, Cadets gain a better understanding of how each of these sections work together to serve and protect the residents of Vancouver.

Cadets also take part in Police Judo, receiving a minimum of 10 hours of instruction, with free access to ongoing training. This specialized training provides our Cadets with valuable self-defence skills, builds strength in character and self-esteem, while also teaching appropriate techniques to those Cadets interested in law enforcement.

Cadets also take part in drill, and have the opportunity to showcase these skills in community parades, such as the annual Remembrance Day and Chinese New Year parades. With two annual weekend camping trips and numerous other special events, such as the Pulling Together Canoe Journey, Polar Bear Plunge, Tough Mudder, snowshoeing trips, laser tag and more, the VPD Cadet program provides a unique opportunity for participants to experience life beyond the rigours of academic pursuits.

While many of the Cadets are interested in careers in law enforcement, there is no such requirement to join, as the values and skills promoted in the program can be applicable to any number of careers. The VPD Cadet program seeks a diverse group of participants, with a variety of personal strengths, characteristics, and interests, with the goal of developing inter- and intra-personal communications, and relationships with their fellow participants. Many of the Cadet Program graduates have gone on to achieve personal successes in their post-secondary education, and employment across the public and private sectors, including the military and positions within the VPD.

This program is both a commitment and an opportunity. We are dedicated to providing participants with the life skills required to become leaders in their communities, to make ethical decisions, and to succeed at whatever they set out to achieve. Beyond the knowledge and skills garnered in the program, Cadets gain invaluable, lifelong friendships built with like-minded youth, as the VPD Cadet program serves as a second family for each of the participants. With a built-in support system and a positive and encouraging program environment, the VPD Cadet program ensures personal growth and development within each individual, while establishing unbreakable bonds between participants.

Life rewards those who show up.
