A Vancouver police officer killed in the line of duty in 1987 will be honoured and remembered on June 6th, as My Own Backyard Association (MOBY) builds a playground at E.11th Avenue and Commercial Drive. The community-designed and community-built playground will be dedicated in his name at 3:00 p.m., after volunteers from the community and the police department gather to build it.
Sergeant Larry Young, who grew up in East Vancouver, was shot and killed on February 2nd, 1987, as a member of the Vancouver Police Emergency Response Team assisting with a high-risk arrest. He is the last Vancouver Police officer to die in the line of duty.

My Own Backyard Association (MOBY) works to improve the safety and self-reliance of its neighborhood through its membership, public education activities, and community interactions. The creation of the playground is the partnership of MOBY, the City of Vancouver, MOSAIC, and Whole Foods Market.
Completion of the project will result in a community-designed play space that enhances the existing green space and provides an opportunity for residents to play and interact with each other. The increased foot traffic and sense of ownership over the space will also increase neighborhood safety.
