One man determined to get away after an alleged hit-and-run is in police custody after Vancouver Police spent an hour tracking him through several west side neighbourhoods.

At about 9:40 p.m. on May 9th, police received several calls after a man driving along 1st Avenue near Arbutus Street crashed into five parked cars and then fled on foot.

After running from the scene, the suspect reportedly tried to drag a man from his car on Arbutus Street near 3rd Avenue. He was unable to remove the driver and took off east to Maple Street where police believe he tried to drag another driver from his car in a continued attempt to flee. Again, he was not able to get into or take the car.

Several minutes later, police were told that someone matching the description of the man they were looking for was attempting to steal a car from a parking lot on West Broadway near Larch Street.

Police continued to receive multiple 9-1-1 calls as he left the parking lot and ran to the area of 10th Avenue and MacDonald Street where he allegedly tried to steal two bicycles from two women.

With the help of the public, several officers using the assistance of a K9, were able to track the man to the backyard of a home in the 2800 block of Waterloo Street. After more than an hour of running, the 25 year old Vancouver resident surrendered to police and was taken into custody.
