A recent scam targeting tax payers is gathering momentum, just in time for tax season.

Police have been receiving reports of a telephone scam where a man and a woman claim to work for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and are responsible for collecting back taxes. The suspects advised victims that if the taxes went unpaid, they would be arrested by police. In some cases, the suspects knew the victim’s home address.

The victims were instructed to send a money order or gift cards to the suspect to cover the debt.

Police are warning the public that they should contact the CRA for clarification, if they are unsure of their correspondence with the CRA.
