The Vancouver Police Department is recognizing a National Day of Honour, commemorating the Afghanistan conflict and those who made sacrifices for their country and the people of Afghanistan.

A total of 40,000 veterans will be honoured, as well as the 158 soldiers, one diplomat, one journalist and several civil servants who were killed in the conflict.

Four members of the VPD served in Afghanistan in a police advisory capacity with the Canadian Civilian Police (CIVPOL).

The VPD has had a further seven members serve in Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces, putting themselves in harm’s way and sacrificing time away from their family and friends to serve our country.

“On behalf of the Vancouver Police Department, I would like to pass on our appreciation for the service and sacrifice that our members, and others have made to protect Canadians and provide a future for the people of Afghanistan,” says Chief Constable Jim Chu. “I would also like to acknowledge the many men and women who have made sacrifices, working overseas in other police and military assignments.”
