Vancouver Police are asking for your help to reduce property crime.

Over the past year, police have seen an increase in reported property crime offences. With help from the public, this type of crime can be prevented. The Vancouver Police Department is committed to decreasing the amount of property crime in our city.

thieves-will-steal-anythingWe have partnered with the BC Crime Prevention Association (BCCPA) to provide the public with education on how to help prevent property crime, and we are asking the public to do their part in making our communities more secure.

As a preventable crime, we all have a role to play. Through education and simple actions, police and citizens can reduce property crime.

Police, community partners, and the public have successfully worked together to address bicycle thefts in Vancouver. We believe the same principals of education and action can be transferred to other types of property crime in our city.

Vancouver has seen an increase of 39 per cent in thefts from autos over 2015. “Thieves will steal anything,” says VPD spokesperson Constable Jason Doucette. “Don’t leave anything visible in your vehicle and lock your doors.”

The VPD has launched several initiatives to educate the public and combat property crime, including a recent theft-from-auto campaign. (POSTER | VIDEO).

The theft of older vehicles and scooters can be reduced through the use of a mechanical device, such as a steering wheel lock or bicycle-type lock. Contact your local community policing centre to find out how you can get a free device.

“Our Bait Car program has expanded to include many types of vehicles,” says VPD spokesperson Constable Jason Doucette. “We want thieves to know that the next vehicle they steal could be a Bait Car.”

Since 2007, new vehicles built in Canada are required to be equipped with an anti-theft engine immobilizer. The theft of older vehicles and scooters can be reduced through the use of a steering wheel or bicycle-type lock.
