One of the best ways to help prevent becoming a victim is to keep a close eye on your belongings.

The most commonly stolen items include wallets, purses, and cell phones, as owners leave items unattended in libraries, coffee shops, night clubs, mall food courts, and parks.

Don’t make theft easy for thieves. If you’re not watching your belongings, someone else might be. Know where your bags, electronics and other valuables are to avoid becoming a victim of theft.

Package Theft

The increase in online shopping has resulted in an increase in parcel theft and porch pirates. If you aren’t going to be home to receive a parcel delivery, consider an alternate shipping address, such as at work or at the home of a friend or neighbour, or have the package held for pick up.

  • Alternate Delivery Address: Have packages delivered to your workplace, a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member who is usually home during delivery hours.
  • Pickup Locations: Utilize services like Amazon Lockers, Canada Post offices, or other retail pick-up points offered by couriers. This ensures your package is stored securely until you can retrieve it.
  • Signature Required: For valuable items, opt for a “signature required” delivery. This means the package won’t be left unattended unless someone is there to sign for it.
  • Custom Delivery Instructions: If possible, provide specific instructions to the courier on where to leave the package, such as a less visible side door, a secure shed, or with a concierge if you live in an apartment building.

  • Real-time Tracking: Sign up for delivery notifications via email or text messages from the shipping company. This allows you to track your package’s progress and know exactly when it’s delivered.
  • Retrieve Promptly: As soon as you receive a delivery notification, try to retrieve your package immediately. The less time it sits on your porch, the lower the risk of theft.

  • Video Doorbells and Security Cameras: Install a video doorbell or other security camera that covers your porch and entry points. Although visible cameras don’t always act as a deterrent, if a theft occurs, you’ll have video evidence for police. Many smart doorbells can also alert you when a package arrives or is removed.
  • Motion Sensor Lights: Well-lit areas can deter thieves. Install motion-activated lights on your porch or around your property.
  • Package Lockboxes: Consider investing in a secure package lockbox for your porch. These boxes often have an opening for couriers to drop packages into a locked compartment, and some even offer smart features like remote access.
  • Maintain an Occupied Look: Use timers for lights or leave a radio/TV on when you’re away to create the illusion that someone is home.

  • Get to Know Your Neighbours: Build a relationship with your neighbours and offer to watch out for each other’s deliveries.
  • Join a Block Watch Program: These programs foster a sense of vigilance and shared responsibility in the community, making it less attractive to criminals.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you see someone suspicious loitering or following delivery trucks in your neighbourhood, report it to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) immediately by calling 911 if it’s in progress, or the non-emergency line (604-717-3321) if some time has passed.

  • Contact the Delivery Company: Report the theft to the courier service (e.g., Canada Post, FedEx, UPS, Amazon). They often have procedures for investigating missing packages.
  • File a Police Report: Make a police report with the VPD. This helps police track trends and can be important for insurance claims. You can often do this online.
  • Check Your Home Insurance: Some home insurance policies may cover stolen packages. Review your policy to understand your coverage and deductible.
