The Vancouver Police Department is proud to introduce the Retired Police Officer Program (RPOP), a temporary contract opportunity for retired officers to return to operational policing in a meaningful and flexible capacity.
RPOP allows retired members to continue serving the community, mentor younger officers, and remain connected to frontline policing – without the commitment of a full-time career.
Available Positions
District 5
District 5 – Teams 5 and 6 will work a four-on / four-off fixed shift from 1100 to 2230 hours.
- District 5 will initially be managed and located in the Annex building at 236 East Cordova Street while a VPD physical space assessment is conducted
- Deployable in uniform
Functions will include:
- Responding to calls for service in District 5
- Reducing violent crime through strategic high-visibility policing deployment and proactive enforcement
- Reducing property crime through targeted enforcement, community engagement, and area knowledge
- Patrolling District 5 communities on foot and engaging with businesses in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), including Gastown, Hastings Crossing, and Chinatown, to build strong relationships with residents and businesses
- Addressing street disorder and associated challenges through prevention, communication, innovation, enforcement, and external partnerships, to reduce fear while improving perceptions of safety
Operational Support Team
The Operational Support Team (OST) reports to the Operational Support Unit (OSU) Sergeant and deploys from 2120 Cambie Street.
- OST will work a four-on / four-off fixed shift from 1100 to 2230 hours
- Deployable in uniform and functions in an operational support capacity
Team members function in an operational capacity by assisting patrol in taking reports from the callboard and supporting investigative units by completing assigned tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting video and witness canvasses
- Crime scene containment
- Completing follow-up with victims, witnesses, and property representatives
- Conducting missing person investigations
Additional Information for All Positions
- Ability to work callouts and overtime; overtime opportunities will be first offered to regular members
- Mandatory callouts will be assigned to regular members first; RPOP members will be assigned if shifts remain to be staffed
- RPOP members will receive 10 sick days (80 hours) per year, with unused hours rolled over to the following year
- RPOP members will receive compensation for any statutory holiday worked; RPOP members will not receive compensation for statutory holidays that fall on their scheduled days off
- These are fixed positions, and RPOP members will not be permitted to apply for regular job postings at this time

Basic Requirements
A retired officer applicant must satisfy the basic requirements to apply for a temporary experienced contract police officer position:
- Eligible to retire, recently retired, or a serving Canadian police officer within the last three years
- Police recruit training provided by any of the following Canadian police training academies:
- RCMP Training Academy (Depot); Ontario Police College
- Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre (Calgary Police Service)
- Edmonton Police Service, Basic Recruit Training
- Lethbridge College
- Winnipeg Police Service, Police Recruit Training Academy
- Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
- Saskatchewan Police College
- École Nationale de Police du Québec
- Atlantic Police Academy
- Canadian Forces Military Police Academy or Justice Institute of British Columbia
- Must not be the subject of any current Police Act allegations, Professional Standards investigations, Independent Investigations Office complaints or equivalent disciplinary processes in other provinces
- Deployable to work patrol
- Pass a medical exam to confirm fit for duty
- Possess a valid CPR-C certification
- Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence
- Able to pass all elements of the on-boarding process, which includes, but not limited to, VPD use-of-force qualifications.
Potential Applicants
Police officer retiring from the VPD wanting to continue working at the VPD:
- Retiring member to express interest to Human Resources Inspector Jim Kenney about continuing to work for the VPD after retirement
- All required provincially mandated training courses, use-of-force, and firearms must be up to date prior to a contract offer, including CPR-C first aid. This allows the VPD contract member to be immediately deployable to patrol.

Police officer who has prior policing service with the VPD within the last 3 years and is now leaving another police agency (with no break in service):
