Update

A 70 year old Vancouver resident was arrested at his home yesterday on charges related to allegations of historic sexual assaults against four young boys.

Acting on information provided in June 2012, the Vancouver Police Sex Crimes Unit initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by Mr. Abraham Kiewiet.

Investigators believe that the alleged offences occurred between 1971 and 1982 while Kiewiet was employed by the Vancouver Park Board as a lifeguard.  During that time he instructed at the Vancouver Lifeguard School and volunteered as a coach at a YMCA aquatic safety program.

Officers have conducted numerous inquiries and as a result four victims have now come forward. At the time of the offences, the victims were between the ages of 11 and 17. The four men are now in their 40s and 50s.

Abraham Kiewiet has been charged with:

  • five counts of indecent assault on a male  (s.148 CC)
  • five counts of gross indecency (s. 157 CC)

Kiewiet has been released on a Promise To Appear and his next scheduled court appearance is on October 10th, 2012, at 222 Main Street.

Sex Crimes Unit Investigators continue to conduct inquiries and believe that there are other victims yet to come forward.
