A persistent Vancouver Police officer is at home recovering after the challenging arrest of a 34 year old Surrey resident yesterday, and police are looking for a driver to come forward.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., police responded to a 9-1-1 call of an alleged assault that occurred near the entrance of Stanley Park. When the first officer arrived, he saw the man believed involved in the assault at the corner of Alberni and Gilford Street. The man immediately ran away north towards Georgia Street, now pursued by the lone officer on foot.

As the two ran out to Georgia Street, the constable was struck by a car travelling west towards the park. The officer managed to pick himself up off the ground and continued to chase after the suspect.

He caught up with the man who then allegedly punched and fought with the officer, even striking him on the head with a rock. Additional officers came to help and the man was taken into custody.

The tenacious officer was taken to hospital and treated for numerous abrasions, and swelling to his arms, legs and face.

Police are hoping to interview the driver of the car that struck the officer about what they witnessed. The car is described as a blue or purple coloured sedan driven by a woman; police believe she may have been confused about what to do following the incident. Investigators are asking her to call (604) 717-2541.

Carlos Armando Flores-Acosta is now facing charges of assault, assault peace officer, assault with a weapon, assault with intent to resist arrest and obstructing a peace officer.
