Police are requesting criminal charges after a man lit a marine flare inside BC Place Stadium during last night’s Whitecaps FC soccer match.

Around 6:00, a 43 year old Vancouver man, surrounded by fans, allegedly lit the flare in the second level seating area and placed it under an unoccupied seat. The flames were quickly extinguished by security through the use of fire extinguishers.

A number of fans suffered breathing difficulties as a result of the flare’s smoke. One woman was transported to hospital for further treatment and has since been released.

The man was located in his seat by security and was arrested by police without incident. He is currently facing charges of mischief, criminal negligence and common nuisance.

He remains in custody pending his appearance before a Justice of the Peace.
