One man has been apprehended and is being taken to a physician following an eight-hour standoff in East Vancouver.

Around 10 a.m., police were called to an apartment in the area of East 16th Avenue and Main Street, after a woman claimed that her ex-boyfriend had broken into her apartment and was acting irrationally.

When police arrived, the woman had already left the apartment, but the distraught man remained inside.

Concerned for the man’s mental well being, police negotiated with him throughout the day in an effort to have him safely surrender to police.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the man jumped from the second floor apartment and ran from the building. Police deployed a number of less lethal beanbag rounds and were subsequently able to gain control of the man with the assistance of a police dog.

The 41-year-old man is being taken to a physician for treatment of an apparent mental disorder and minor injuries that are believed to have been sustained during the struggle.
