One man is in custody following a seven-hour standoff with police in East Vancouver.

Around 11:30 a.m., police responded to an apartment building in the 800 block of East 6th Avenue after receiving reports that a man had been assaulted. When police arrived, they found a man with minor injuries to his face. He was taken to hospital by paramedics for the treatment.

A short time later, the suspect was located inside his apartment. Police surrounded his suite, but he refused to follow police direction to exit.

Following seven hours of negotiations, police were unsuccessful in gaining his cooperation. Officers were ultimately required to obtain a warrant to enter the apartment in order to arrest the suspect.

Upon entering the suite around 7:30 p.m., he continued to ignore police directions and he was taken into custody with the assistance of a police dog.

A 36-year-old man is now facing charges in relation to the alleged assault of his 47-year-old roommate.
