The path to justice and accountability in the murder of Alfred Wong has been long and difficult.

Alfred was an innocent victim, caught in the crossfire of a senseless gang war, when he was shot and killed while riding in the back of his parents’ car on January 13, 2018. He was just 15 years old the night his life was stolen.

For nearly a decade, Alfred’s friends, family, and loved ones – along with all of the Vancouver Police members who investigated his murder over many years – have waited for the person who committed this senseless crime to meet justice.

Thank you to the BC Prosecution Service for their diligence in trying this case, and to the members of the jury who thoughtfully deliberated to reach a verdict of second-degree murder against Kane Carter. The jury also delivered a guilty verdict in the second-degree murder of Kevin Whiteside.

I am eternally grateful to all of the Vancouver Police officers and civilian professionals who have spent years pursuing justice for Alfred’s murder, with assistance from Durham Regional Police and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC.

My thoughts today are also with the family of Alfred Wong. While nothing will ease the pain of their loss, I hope the guilty verdict delivered this week will begin to provide answers and relief for their sorrow.
