The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act provides individuals with the right of access to records in the custody or control of a public body subject to listed exceptions which may be applicable to the request.

Submitting a Request

Please make your request for information in writing using one of the below mentioned methods for submission. You will need to confirm your identification if it is relevant to the processing of your request (e.g., you are requesting your own information or someone else’s personal information with their authorization).

Please forward your completed form and identification in one of three ways:

Please make your request as specific as possible. Provide case numbers, exact dates and addresses, and names and numbers of officers involved (if you have this information), so we can conduct a more accurate search for the information requested.

If you are requesting information to dispute a traffic violation, please contact the police officer directly.

If you have questions, please contact the Information and Privacy Unit at 604-717-3071.

Identity Verification

If you are requesting personal records about yourself, we need to verify your identity to make sure we are giving access to the right person. You will be asked to produce government-issue photo identification, such as a driver’s licence or passport. This can be done either when you submit your request or when picking up our response in person. For email or mail requests, we ask for the following:

  • a copy of your government issued photo ID (e.g. driver’s licence)
  • a photo of you holding your ID

Information That Will Not be Provided

If the record you request contains personal information about someone else, and it would be an unreasonable invasion of their privacy to provide that information, we must redact that information from the record.

If you are requesting sensitive law enforcement information that could be harmful to a law enforcement matter if disclosed, that part of the requested record will be redacted.

The Act contains other exemptions that may apply and will be considered depending on the nature of the request.
