A police cruiser is in the shop after a “designated driver” suspected of impaired driving crashed into the back of a police car at an overnight Counter Attack roadblock.

Around 4:00 this morning, Vancouver Police were operating a Counter Attack roadblock in the 1100 block of the Grandview Viaduct (connecting Terminal Avenue to 1st Avenue), when a suspected impaired driver crashed into the back of an unoccupied police cruiser that was parked in the centre lane, facing east on the viaduct.

The police car, with emergency lights flashing, was pushed forward approximately five feet as a result of the crash. Fortunately there were no police officers in front of the cruiser at the time of the collision.

The impaired driver and three passengers in the car were not injured in the crash.

The 22 year old man driving the car was issued an Administrative Driving Prohibition and was released on a Promise to Appear, pending charges of impaired driving and driving over 80 milligrams after he failed two breathalyzer tests.

“Police are on the roads to protect the public from impaired drivers,” says Les Yeo, Inspector in charge of the VPD Traffic Enforcement Unit.

“A police officer or member of the public could easily have been injured or killed as a result of this man’s poor choice to be a designated driver and operate a car while under the influence of alcohol.”

Police will be conducting Counter Attack roadblocks throughout the summer, doing our part to ensure that we all get to our destinations safely.
