There were 702 residential break-and-enters in Vancouver in the first four months this year. While the number is down from last year, the Vancouver Police Department is hoping that homeowners keep vigilant, particularly since many of these break-ins show no signs of forced entry.
While the number fluctuates from month-to-month, approximately 25% of home break-ins occur when someone enters through an open or unlocked door or window.
The warmer weather is approaching and more people will be spending time outdoors and leaving windows and doors open to stay cool.
“Don’t help thieves by giving them the opportunity to come in and steal from you,” says VPD Constable Brian Montague. “Any door or window, even above the ground floor, can be used by crooks to enter your home.”
Something as simple as making sure your windows and doors are locked can stop a thief. Getting to know your neighbours is also a great way to prevent crime; consider joining Block Watch.
